[Discussion] Any advice for the first dog park visit?
My retriever-mix Lady Bird is about 7 months old, and the sweetest little lady. I’ve socialized her like crazy since the day I got her (she was 8 weeks). She comes with me to every dog-friendly establishment in town, and she’s also been going to dog daycare since she was 4 months old.
My city had a dog park membership, and I think Lady Bird would love the opportunity to make some new friends and run around outside off-leash. I’m a bit hesitant to take the plunge though—I’ve read some horror stories about first time park visitors being disrespectful or aggressive dogs attacking other dogs. I was also advised by my trainer to not go because of the variables you can’t plan for (inattentive owners, aggressive dogs, etc).
What is the best way to introduce a dog to the dog park? What preparatory steps can I take to make sure it’s a positive experience for everyone involved? I would love to hear from some seasoned dog park veterans.
